Hurst
Excavating was founded by William (Bill) Hurst in 1993.
Hurst Excavating’s work mainly consisted of sub-division,
condo, commercial and residential site preparation. On Sept.
18th 1994 Bill past away suddenly due to a
motorcycle accident. Kathalene Hurst, Bill’s wife and
David Hurst, Bill’s son felt obligated to complete
the work under contract. David took a leave of absence from
his current job at the Knoxville Utilities Board to finish
the projects. In the spring of 1996, after trying to operate
Hurst Excavating and hold down a full time job David decided
to pursue a career in the contracting business. With help
from his mother managing the books and a reputation of trust
and dedication from his father, David purchased the
equipment his father had operated, which were a Caterpillar
955 HiLift and ’84 Mack Dump Truck. David ran the business
as a one man operation doing mostly clearing, residential
house sites, footings, septic systems, anything to make ends
meet. Resuming to the utility background where he had
experience, he targeted municipalities and general
contractors. Today he does contracting in commercial site
preparation, underground utility construction,
rehabilitation of existing utilities by pipe bursting method
and by cured in place method.
